Acting on a tip-off, Kadamtala Battalion of Security Forces conducted an operation in New Kaiphundai area of Tamenglong district on Sunday mid-night. The recoveries of ammunition include two US-Made M-Series Assault Rifles, around 425 rounds of live ammunition and three hand grenades.
Officials from Pro IGAR, Kohima on Monday informed the media that, these apprehended cadres were allegedly involved in a recent kidnapping of a truck driver from NH-37 near Makru Bridge of Tamenglong.
“The incident took place on NH-37 near Makru Bridge. Security Forces along with Manipur Police launched immediate operations to apprehend the perpetrators and achieved the major breakthrough. However the forces are yet to rescue the kidnapped driver.”
He further said, “NH-37 links Manipur with the rest of country and it has an economic importance. Trucks carrying goods from various parts of the country travel through this road and these outfits try to take advantage of this. Several incidents of extortions, kidnappings and illegal tax collection were reported along this road in past. Various insurgent groups including NSCN (K), LTT – erstwhile UTLA (P) and NSCN (IM) have openly claimed about their involvement in some of these incidents. These incidents are making huge impact on development works as well as on common lifestyle of locals.
Security Forces are taking steps to control such activities. Recently, a major drive was launched against these illegal activities at Tamenglong district. As part of this drive, Kadamtala Battalion of Manipur apprehended cadres of several outfits and recovered some arms as well. Four cadres of UTLA (P) group with sophisticated arms and ammunition were arrested from the same are on June 10 this year.”
