Internationally renowned British tax attorney Nigel Popplewell has said that Tarique Rahman, who is currently living in London under political asylum, has applied for British citizenship for his wife and daughter. Through his law firm Burges Salmon Tarique submitted two separate applications of Zubaida Rahman and Zaima Rahman for their permanent residence in Britain, Nigel claims.
It has been mentioned in those two applications that Zubaida and Zaima have assets worth seven million British pounds (approximately Bangladeshi Tk 770 crore) in different countries. And if the British government allows them to settle permanently in the country, they can invest the money in Britain and thus the British economy could benefit.

A source of Burges Salmon said on 13th December that the two applications for permanent citizenship have been submitted to the UK Visas and Immigration Department. British law states that if an immigrant lives in Britain for ten years legally, he or she can apply for permanent citizenship. Most Bangladeshi immigrants have availed this opportunity. However, this provision is not applicable for those who have specific allegations against them. In such condition, one must take the Oath of Allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen.
y profession Zubaida Rahman is a physician, however, she is living in London as a housewife. On the other hand, Tarique’s daughter Zaima Rahman is studying law at a private university in London. Both have referred their assets as inherited and dividends of investments.

Earlier Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) claimed that the Zia family has no overseas assets. However, by providing information about the assets worth Tk770 crore in those applications, Zia family affirms the existence of their overseas assets.
Although Tarique Rahman’s wife and daughter applied for British citizenship, Tarique himself has not yet applied.
